HEY TEAM!
so no one really "followed" our miles to long beach project. But gosh darn it- it was a good idea! In any case, we may have gone far beyond Long Beach in our practice miles, but what was stellar was the racing that happened when we actually got there.
Congratulations Survivors- you guys are more than awesome. You inspire me to be better.

OUT OF THE FOG

After last Sunday's fog-cloaked adventure during which it felt as if we'd been transported back to Sherlock Holmes' London, especially with Trish's colorfully accented admonishments to "stay in the boat!", this Sunday dawned with brilliant orange and pink skies and San Diego's more typical blinding sunshine. The water was green and as flat as an ironed sheet. Canadian geese bobbed for grubs and other delicious morsels in the mud flats along the shore and small coot-like birds dove and swam around our 10-person boat.

Cheance announced that we would be doing "Pyramids" in honor of the recent events in Egypt. This type of pyramid turned out to involve paddling stints of gradually increasing time periods interspersed with short rests. So, we paddled for a minute, then rested, paddled for two minutes, then rested some more, three minutes, more rest, and then the whole thing backwards. We did this several times, though not as many as Cheance would have liked! Unfortunately, we also did not have time for the "Chaos" drill, much to the disappointment of those who look forward to the excitement of "chaos" each week. Maybe Thursday! The practice went smoothly and our paddling rate was a strong 60 strokes per minute. Hopefully, we may soon increase it to 70, 80, 90, and beyond!

Cheance and several team members stayed on past 9:15 to train the new team members-

February 6

Hey team! Thanks for braving the elements and early morning to join us for an interesting and challenging practice. When the other boat pulled away, they were swallowed by the fog before they hit 20 strokes! The pea-soup fog was eerie and yet peaceful. So much so that we couldnt even hear the boat as their paddles hit the water! Nevertheless, we paddled a good long hard practice covering 5 more miles on our trek to Long Beach. I will down load the GPS shoreline venture a little later. We are counting down our days, hours, minutes left until the first race of our "season" in Tempe AZ coming up March 26 and 27th. Its going to be a lot of fun preparing for teh event as well as racing!
Remember we added Thursday nights to our schedule this week- on the water at 6:15pm- so please try to get to the boats by 6 so we can be back to the beach by 7:15.

January -

Jan 30: Last effort of this month! Nicely done team! We had a really strong workout with putting 2 boats side-by-side. Really promotes a competitive spirit! Nice job bringing in a few more recruits to the beach- I was hoping that Lucy was going to bring her entourage! Will that be another orientation then? Thats fine- if it turns out we need to run another, we can. And the new folks will get about a 1/2 at the end of our Sunday practices as we bring them up to speed! In the mean time here is the garmin info from Sunday.

Jan 23rd: Well, off we go! Nice job today and great turn out, once again, by the Survivors!
We logged in another 3.2 miles! And kudos to Roberta for getting schooled by Jerry and Susie on steering- I was hoping to get Ronnie over there too- next time!
Afterwards I saw Kim and Roberta over at the Santa Clara OC demo, braving the gale-storm winds back there! I think they may have settled on a purchase! Good for you guys!

Next week: Lets see if we can top the recruiting efforts of the open team, but I warn you Judith's recruiting number will be hard to beat- she has 43 -scratch that 53! people who rsvped "yes" to her invite to come try the sport on Sunday! If we can get 1/4 as many we'd be set pretty well.

Bring a buddy, family member or friend to the orientation on the 30th!
Its looking to be a fun day.
After our practice from 8-9 we will regroup and introduce the newbies to veteran paddlers, discuss, teach, demonstrate the dynamics and basics of the stroke and then get them on the water to paddle!
We'll tool around the bay for about a half hour and then - we eat!
Tell interested participants that no experience is necessary!
They should dress in layers, and bring a change of clothes as they may be getting wet- right Lucy?
We are planning to have fun! I promise not to scare them away!

Jan 16th: Hey TEAM! Hope you all felt that you benefited by todays video and stationary boat circus! I think combining with the open team will be more productive after we all work out the kinks of getting it together. The sooner we and they can understand the basics involved in the stroke, the better off we will be. In any case its helpful to us to be able to take advantage of their capabilities for film and additional steering talent. Video is a key component of learning and we hope to take more advantage it their set-up.
Overall I think practice went well, it was a gorgeous day in San Diego and I appreciate you all making it to practice this morning!
Anyone else have some thoughts about our practice and our journey to Long Beach?

Paula says that a lot of people phoned in to SeaWorld concerned about the bay dolphin, and was assured that the critter is a-ok.
Here is the GPS red-blob !

Jan 9th
:
Another great day-even tho it was early.. oy vey, thanks for encouraging yourselves to get up and out the door today at o'dark thirty! But it was a beautiful day to be on the water. We even spotted a dolphin in the bay. I think Paula was going to inform SeaWorld to try to coax it back to the ocean.
Combing efforts with the open team will benefit our efforts to take it up a notch. I hope the breakdown of the stroke that Mike offered was helpful to you. I've set up another tab on the "home" page that explains the stroke by breaking it down to each "phase".
We paddled 4 more miles towards our goal!

Jan2nd: We set out for our first day towards "paddling to Long Beach". It was supposed to rain Sunday, lucky for us it held off until the afternoon. Chilly, typical January morning, and we met up with some of the paddlers from the San Diego open team, and filled a boat with 20 people and set off - we logged in a very successful 4.44 miles today.

If we were to set out by land, as previously noted, we would have gotten to Rubios on Mission Bay Drive heading to the I5.

Financial contributions are greatly appreciated
